Pupils at Greave Primary School in Stockport have received an important lesson in railway safety, thanks to a visit from SLC, an infrastructure development and delivery specialist.

SLC’s Senior Project Engineer, Isaac Horgli, visited the school to help pupils understand the potential dangers associated with the railway and encourage them to make safe and responsible choices. SLC has a track record of supporting railway projects across Greater Manchester, including working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to develop plans for a new railway station at Golborne.

The company also supported TfGM in securing a station licence and taking over the operation of
Horwich Parkway station, helping to bring greater local control to the city-region’s rail network and
are currently working on a Feasibility and Option Selection study to support the expanding needs of
an existing depot in the region.

For Isaac, who lives in Greater Manchester, the school visit was particularly meaningful, marking his
first school engagement session since joining SLC and providing an opportunity to give back to his
local community. He said: “Visiting Greave Primary School gave me the opportunity to help children
understand the dangers of the railway while giving something back to my local community. The pupils
were so enthusiastic and engaged throughout the visit. It was a fantastic experience, and I left feeling
proud to have played a part in sharing such an important message.”

Jennie Williams, Headteacher of Greave Primary School said: “The session was delivered in a fun and
interactive way, ensuring all ages of children left with clear key rail safety messages. The railway
network provides links and is utilised by many of the children and their families. It is reassuring to
know that they can now do this with a greater understanding of the dangers this may present. The
school appreciates the opportunity of working together to keep the community safe.”

Educating children about railway safety from an early age can help them recognise potential risks and
make safer choices. Visits like this also help strengthen relationships between the railway industry
and local communities, bringing important safety messages directly into the classroom.

SLC is also a long-standing partner of the Rail Safe Friendly programme, which aims to educate young
people about the dangers associated with the railway and promote safer behaviours. Through its
community engagement activities, SLC continues to use its industry knowledge and expertise to
support railway safety awareness and make a positive contribution to the communities in which it
works.
