SLC joined project partners to celebrate the start of construction on the new Waterbeach railway station.

Working alongside the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), SLC is playing a key role in overseeing the design and construction of the new station, providing multidisciplinary expertise to support the project from design through to delivery.

The milestone was marked with an official groundbreaking ceremony, where GCP Chair, Cllr Brian Milnes, turned the first spade in the ground alongside project partners.

The new station, jointly funded by GCP and Homes England, will provide improved transport facilities for the growing Waterbeach community.

SLC is supporting the delivery of the project through a range of specialist services, including engineering management, project management, commercial management, strategic advisory, property and planning. Bringing together expertise from across the business, SLC is helping to coordinate the complex requirements involved in delivering the new railway infrastructure.

Nathan Campsall, Director of SLC, said: “A great deal of work has gone into reaching this important milestone and it’s fantastic to see partners coming together to mark the occasion. SLC is proud to be working with GCP and other partners, bringing together expertise from across our multidisciplinary team to help take the station from design through to delivery. We look forward to continuing that collaboration as the project moves into its next stage.”

The new Waterbeach station will deliver a range of improvements for passengers, including wider platforms, an accessible footbridge and lifts, 100 cycle spaces, electric vehicle charging points and integrated walking, cycling and bus facilities.

GCP Chair Cllr Brian Milnes said: “We’re making good progress delivering a new station for Waterbeach, which has unlocked planning permission for 4,500 new homes. This is about more than a station, we’re delivering a whole package of transport projects in Waterbeach: a new travel hub with park and ride facilities, a new busway and the Waterbeach Greenway. Together we’re providing sustainable and convenient ways for people to travel, not only in Waterbeach, but across Greater Cambridge.”

Justin Hopkins, Managing Director of Spencer Rail Engineering, said: “We’re proud to be partnering with the Greater Cambridge Partnership to deliver the new Waterbeach station. Reaching this milestone has taken a great deal of hard work from everyone involved, and it’s a real moment to see spades in the ground. “Our team brings extensive experience of delivering complex rail infrastructure, and we look forward to working with GCP and our partners to create a modern, accessible station. It will serve Waterbeach’s growing community for decades to come.”

GCP is also proposing further enhancements to the station design, including a waiting room, toilets and dedicated space for a café.

The station forms part of a wider package of transport improvements in Waterbeach, including a new travel hub, busway and the Waterbeach Greenway, designed to support sustainable travel and improved connectivity across Greater Cambridge.

With construction now underway, SLC will continue working closely with GCP and project partners to support the successful delivery of the new station.
