SLC is proud to have supported the transformation of Castle Cary Station for Great Western Railway (GWR), providing specialist Clerk of Works and construction assurance services throughout the delivery of this historic station project.

Originally opened in 1856, Castle Cary has undergone a significant restoration and enhancement programme to preserve its historic character while creating a more accessible and welcoming station for today’s passengers.

The project demonstrates the value that experienced, site-based construction professionals can bring to complex works in a live operational environment.

Acting on behalf of the client, SLC’s Clerk of Works provided an important independent layer of construction assurance, monitoring quality and materials against the agreed design and specification, maintaining detailed site and photographic records, monitoring progress, safety and working closely with the contractor, Contract Administrator and wider project team to identify, escalate and support the timely resolution of issues as the works progressed.

This hands-on approach is central to SLC’s wider Construction Management capability. Our specialist teams help clients maintain visibility and control throughout construction, bringing together technical and quality assurance, health and safety, programme awareness, stakeholder coordination and defect management to help protect project outcomes and client investment.

At Castle Cary, this assurance supported the delivery of a scheme incorporating restored historic features, a relocated ticket office, improved accessible facilities and routes, a new step-free access ramp, automatic doors and the reopening of the station’s historic entrance.

The official opening took place earlier this month.
